The Cure: How a Father Raised 0 Million--and Bucked the Medical Establishment--in a Quest to Save His Children

The riveting true story of John and Aileen Crowley’s race to find a cure for Pompe disease that inspired the movie Extraordinary Measures

With three beautiful children, a new house, and financial security, John and Aileen Crowley were on top of the world—until their two youngest children, fifteen-month-old Megan and five-month-old Patrick, were diagnosed with Pompe disease and given only months to live. Refusing to accept a death sentence, John quit his financial consultant job and invested his life savings in a biotechnology start-up to research the disease and find a cure. Battling scientific setbacks, conflict of interest accusations, and business troubles, John and Aileen would be tested to their limits as they valiantly fought, and succeeded, in finding revolutionary new treatment for the disease—offering hope to Megan, Patrick, and the many children and families affected by Pompe disease around the world.

The inspiration for the captivating film Extraordinary Measures, starring Brendan Fraser and Harrison Ford, The Cure is a remarkable true story of cutting-edge science, business acumen and daring, and one family’s indomitable spirit.

Review Destiny Disrupted: A History of the World through Islamic Eyes

Destiny Disrupted: A History of the World through Islamic Eyes

We in the west share a common narrative of world history—that runs from the Nile Valley and Mesopotomia, through Greece and Rome and the French Revolution, to the rise of the secular state and the triumph of democracy. But our story largely omits a whole civilization that until quite recently saw itself at the center of world history, and whose citizens shared an entirely different narrative for a thousand years.

In Destiny Disrupted, Tamim Ansary tells the rich story of world history as the Islamic world saw it, from the time of Mohammed to the fall of the Ottoman Empire and beyond. He clarifies why our civilizations grew up oblivious to each other, what happened when they intersected, and how the Islamic world was affected by its slow recognition that Europe—a place it long perceived as primitive and disorganized—had somehow hijacked destiny. Entertaining and enlightening, Destiny Disrupted also offers a vital perspective on current conflicts.

Over the last 2 years, my grandchildren have learned to read and ask them to read us. They found that there are many places to visit in the history of a children's book. That there are many stories that can be transported to another place and time.

Every child likes to have a turning point in reading a story and when the 4-year-old Alexandra's turn, he always followed his finger and tries to read it as best they can. We all help, but ends, from which most ofHistory.

What a great family that we have together, reading and helping her to read. I do not want to miss anything. It's really great that we as grandparents of an extended family to have.

This time reading every night has brought our family so much closer. The older boy is 7 and sometimes have time to read a story book for children, while we had breakfast in the morning.

Then they all sat in the kitchen, bar and everyone gets to readJokes from their book joke. I bought them at the Book Fair this year. This is one thing morning. This we find him so happy and excited to have the breakfast bar so you can read about us.

But they also have a joke in a good mood for the day. No more fun of the morning in a bad mood just trying to awaken. Yes, the pound above the TV and video games every day. The children are in a much better mood all the time.

When I went to North Shore LighthouseHawaii this last trip, I bought a book to go to sleep with a CD. Last night I was sitting with his grandson and we heard, while the older boy came into the book with his finger on every word.

Alexandra was so tired I could hardly head. It has simply changed 4 Then there was a lullaby in Hawaiian and then in English. This book was so comforting, really hard to stay awake. Once it was finished, he wanted to take her to bed.

I have his CD player from them shortlyBed, and I am in bed beside her. She fell asleep and when he finished, he murmured: "Please play it again." I did. And every time I went in his room to check on her, I pushed the button to play it again. Even if he slept, I knew that they like.

The next morning he woke up at 5.30 clock on their parents for them to hear from you. Loves this story and she said she wanted "to listen to every night." This is much better than watching TV, while it fallsasleep.

I am so happy that I have children's books instead of toys, bring them. I travel to Hawaii many times and I always bring back stories of Hawaiian culture and marine animals so they can learn something new about a different part of the world.

Since we started to read this book in the history of the children of the night, the children cut down in video games and TV. At first it was difficult for her, but now, would not return to the way they were. Wouldinstead of reading a book and am very happy. There's a fight much less and no more nightmares. The whole family has been helpful to one another and we, the adults, well, ecstatic.

So, our family company believed – and to live all these rumors about how the children read the history books are much better for the child as a television. I think it is better for adults too. But then I grew up reading all the time. I realize that I am so happy to read with less television and more. Sun, Readinghas a really good all the family. Life is so funny! Let's find out more!

Reviewed by Beverly Beijing for Reader Views (8 / 06)

Except, of course, you heard of a cave crawl hibernation after 20 years must be about Harry Potter and all its splendor. Now they say that Weird Al Yankovich and JK Rowling connected to create a book. What do you want? You could have "Henry Pottyand the Pet Rock. "

An absolutely hilarious take on the stories of Harry Potter, Frankel takes a stab again a similar story line, but with some crazy characters and events. A parody like no other I've ever seen in literature, we laugh and laugh until stomach hurts!

Characters that are just silly and fun to do a story in question, said a second look at the series of Harry Potter "makes Hmmm, I wonder if JK Rowling ever thought so." SinceMain character, Henry Potty takes a series of strange events on a silly story to create a lot that like anyone with a child at heart. Not read, but a boy will be limited, the adults can enjoy the magical world of our children seem obsessed with the capture, as Henry enters the ranking of colleagues and goofball Jokester on Chickenfeet Academy.

Absolutely witty satire, Frankel somehow brings the characters beyond what is expected as laughing your way through theBook. Foolish, absurd and totally nuts, you can not help but enjoy the ride while you sit and read "Henry Potty and the Pet Rock." If you have a Harry Potter fan at home, will be entertained at the parodies. If you're a Harry Potter 'no' camp are at home, will love the jab fun. And if you simply want a good laugh Enjoy every page! In fact, for children of all ages 2-222!
